Quiet Sincerity Marks Tony Middleton’s Album

From the tiny St. George Island off the northwest coast of Florida, Tony Middleton, is crafting simple and heartfelt Christian worship songs in a little portion of paradise. While Tony shares a name with an infamous Jazz musician, this Tony displays his heart for Jesus through the craft of worship music that is classified as easy listening. Tony’s latest album, Praise and Love, Wonder and Worship, is produced to the highest quality of excellence that any musician would want from an album. Utilizing piano, mandolin, slide guitar, harp, excellent vocalists, electric guitar, and several percussion instruments, (just to name a few) each instrument is used with restraint in a delicate dance that supports the meaning of each song, never stepping over the reverently sung vocals of Tony Middleton.

Praise and Love, Wonder and Worship opens with the title track, an upbeat tune with a world music feel. Sprinkled with mandolin, heavenly backing vocals and enthusiastic percussion, “Praise and Love, Wonder and Worship” proclaims and prepares the listener for a wonderful ride through the rest of the album.

Several reverential and introspective songs fill the front half of this album, but picks up with “Glory Days.” This is a celebratory song that has a moderate rock beat, ushering in the excitement for the coming king. Many of the songs on the back half of this album are upbeat or mid tempo, “We Lift Our Hands,” “Praise Your Name,” and “Forgiveness.”

The best song on Praise and Love, Wonder and Worship, my opinion, is “Forever.” The treatment of this song is exceptionally reverent and has an ending that sounds like it could have been sung in an old cathedral. The backing vocals, sound like they are in the rafters of a large building, but Tony’s voice is so close and intimate, it’s nice.

This album is not for those looking for alternative sounds, it’s set in a very classic tone, with the arrangements familiar to those who are fans of Kenny Rogers, Amy Grant, and possibly Rich Mullins. Tony is not an outstanding singer, he’s not going to win any vocal gymnastic medals, but there’s a quiet sincerity to the way he sings, and that is enough for the style he’s writing.

Praise and Love, Wonder and Worship shows growth in Tony as a songwriter from his previous work, ‘Go With God.’ There’s more depth to the lyrical content in Praise and Love, Wonder and Worship, as well as a development in expanding of finding different ways to say the same thing.

In addition to writing and singing albums of Christian worship music, Tony Middleton also leads worship at St. George Island’s First Baptist Church.
