In the Shadow of Wings

album cover for Charis' Shadwo

If you are going to release an EP with three songs, make those three songs stand out. Charis has released Shadow, an introductory to her songwriting, her heart, and some exceptional production work by Lalo Guzman. Shadow rests on intimate lyrical themes of resting and waiting on God. While the melodies and lyrics lilt above slightly gritty urban beats, like the artist Lorde or Christian artist Brooke Fraser’s more recent album, Charis’ voice has excellent tone and emotional character that reaches out, grabs your heart and pulls you into each song.

Shadow begins with it’s title track, “Shadow.” This track ebbs and flows with an expanse of sound, at times small and then swelling to billows of clouds filling dark caverns with their soft light. “Until You Move” has more of a contemporary waltz feel. Distant synths drone under a layer of gauze, while piano and vocals stay centered in the foreground, hanging like a still set of chimes. The EP ends with “Gardens.” Gently layered harmonies, and thematically speaking of relationship that has seasons with God, this is an excellent allegory, beautifully sung, written and produced.

The short, but gorgeous Shadow is worth not only one listen, but several spins in your playlist. Especially if you are in a season of waiting on God. Shadow makes good of Psalm 91 and related scriptures.

Do yourself, or your friend a favor and pick this up.

Charis’ real name is Callie, and she grew up in Texas, but moved to Nashville and is currently leading worship in Lisbon, Portugal in a church start-up*.
