A Beautiful and Evocative Liturgy

Father daughter duo, Rich Kirkpatrick and Emilie Joelle known as A Beautiful Liturgy, bring a deeply introspective side to worship with their contemplative lyrics and lush soundscape. Drenched with orchestral elements, A Beautiful Liturgy‘s self titled EP, sounds contemporary and classic in their approach to these five songs.

A Beautiful Liturgy begins with a modern kyrie, “Lord Have Mercy.” Emilie Joelle’s voice is emotive and evocative, dwelling on the mercy of God. Beginning simply with just vocals and guitar, it swells into waves of gorgeous pools of sound. Rich’s voice adds wonderful textures in the harmonies. “From Shore to Shore” Emilie and Rich swap vocal duties. The lyrical images in this track are exceptional, rich in depth and marine themes. “O To Be Like You” and “You’re Coming Home Soon” feature more of Emilie’s honeyed vocals, with Rich leading the final track “Today a Risen King.”

Lyrically, this EP is head and shoulders above many other songwriters, exhibiting the years of devotion to song craft between father and daughter. Melodically it’s a bit melancholy in approach, but suits the vocal stylings of Emilie Joelle.
